The Level 3 Solar Home program is designed to be a net-zero energy solar home. This means the home will produce as much, if not more, energy than it consumes during the normal operation of the home.
Key energy efficiency features of the Level 3 Solar Home include:
- HERS Index of 51 or better – 35% or more efficient than current City Code in energy
- HVAC system 15 SEER or better
- ENERGY STAR qualified appliances
- Extremely efficient building envelope (roof, walls, windows and doors)
- Advanced insulation
- High performance lighting
- Solar PV system to meet the home’s energy requirements
Build San Antonio Green stresses the importance of building an extremely efficient home before adding a solar energy system. The size of the solar energy system required is then greatly reduced, which saves money in the outset as well as increasing the payback period for the homeowner.
